VSTEP Writing has two pieces: a letter and an essay. The mistake that costs candidates most on Task 1 is not grammar — it is register: writing an informal letter when the prompt asked for a formal one, or the reverse.
What is on VSTEP Writing?
VSTEP is Vietnam's national English certificate, built on the country's six-level framework and used by civil servants, graduating students, and lecturers. The Writing section has Task 1 — a letter written in either a formal or informal register depending on the situation in the prompt — and Task 2, an opinion essay. The AI grades both, and for Task 1 it checks whether you held the register the prompt asked for.
What the grading includes
- An estimated score for each piece and the matching level across B1, B2, and C1.
- For Task 1: a check on whether your register is formal or informal as the prompt requires — the most commonly overlooked mistake.
- Per-criterion comments quoting specific sentences from your work.
- Errors marked in place by category: grammar, spelling, coherence, lexical choice, and task response.
- Sentence rewrites and vocabulary upgrades for each error.
- A Vietnamese translation of the feedback, plus PDF export of the graded piece.
How to practice VSTEP Writing
- Pick Task 1 (letter) or Task 2 (essay), take a prompt from the library or enter your own.

Which level do you need?
VSTEP reports against a six-level framework, and different purposes require different levels:
- B1 — the graduation requirement at many universities.
- B2 — commonly required of civil servants and master's students.
- C1 — typically expected of lecturers and doctoral candidates.

Is AI VSTEP scoring accurate?
The AI returns an estimated score and level for reference while you practice. It is not an official result and it cannot predict your real exam score. VSTEP is administered by institutions authorised by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training, and S English is not affiliated with them. Use the feedback to know what to fix.
What is the difference between a formal and an informal letter?
They differ in how you address the reader, how you open and close, how much you contract words, and overall tone. A letter to an institution, a school, or a stranger needs a formal register; one to a friend or relative is informal. A grammatically perfect letter in the wrong register still loses marks, so decide this before you start writing.
Can I use my own VSTEP prompts?
Yes. Prompts from a book or a mock test both work.
How is VSTEP different from IELTS?
VSTEP is a domestic certificate on Vietnam's six-level framework, used mainly for public-sector work and graduation requirements. IELTS is international, used for study abroad and immigration. The writing formats differ too: VSTEP has a letter, whereas IELTS Task 1 is a data description.
