How to Write IELTS Writing Task 2: Structure and Development
Task 2 weighs more than Task 1 in your Writing score, and it is where most people get stuck — usually not for lack of vocabulary, but because they cannot develop an idea far enough.
Identify the question type before you write
Read the prompt carefully to see what it actually asks: agree or disagree, discuss both views, analyse causes and solutions, or weigh advantages against disadvantages. Answering the wrong question is the most expensive mistake there is, because it drags Task Response down no matter how well you write.
Spend 3-5 minutes planning before you write. That time almost always pays itself back in coherence.
A four-paragraph structure
1. Introduction: paraphrase the prompt and state your position up front.
2-3. Two body paragraphs: one main idea each. State the idea, explain why, then give a concrete example. One idea developed properly always beats three mentioned in passing.
4. Conclusion: restate your position; introduce nothing new.
When practicing on S English you can write Task 2 section by section — introduction, body 1, body 2, conclusion — to build the habit.
Common topics and how to prepare
Task 2 prompts revolve around a familiar set of areas: education, environment, work and careers, government and justice, science and technology, health, entertainment, society and culture, economics, and travel and transport.
Rather than memorising model answers, build a stock of ideas and vocabulary for each area. Examiners spot a memorised essay quickly, and it usually goes off-topic because it does not address the specific question.

At least 250. Writing under the limit costs you marks, but writing far over earns you nothing — the quality of your argument decides the score, not the length.
